Restaurant Review Request Email Template
Restaurant review volume directly impacts your position in Google Maps results and Yelp's search ranking. A restaurant with 200 reviews and a 4.5 rating will consistently show above a competitor with 40 reviews and a 4.8 — recency and volume win. The best time to ask a diner for a review is the day after their visit, while the meal is still memorable. This template is written for that moment: warm, brief, and specific to the dining context.

TEMPLATE VARIATIONS
More Ways to Use It
Same structure, different tone. Pick the one that fits the situation.
Version 1 — Yelp-focused
Subject: Were you happy with your visit?
Hi [GUEST NAME], thank you for coming in! We'd really appreciate your honest review on Yelp — it helps other diners discover us and tells us how we're doing: [YELP LINK]. Hope to see you again soon!
Version 2 — Post-special-occasion (birthday, anniversary)
Subject: Thank you for celebrating with us
Hi [GUEST NAME], it was truly our pleasure to be part of your [occasion] celebration. We hope the evening was everything you hoped for. If you'd like to share your experience, we'd be honored to read it: [REVIEW LINK]. Thank you for choosing us for such a special moment.
WHEN TO USE
Send the day after the visit — 18–24 hours post-dining is the sweet spot. Capture the guest's email at reservation (OpenTable, Resy) or via your booking system, and trigger this automatically. For instant post-visit requests, use the restaurant SMS review request template instead.
CUSTOMIZATION TIPS
Reference the meal if you have the data — "We hope you enjoyed the tasting menu" or "We're glad you joined us for brunch" makes the email feel personal, not automated.
Include both a review link and a direct reply option for unhappy guests. This catches negative feedback before it becomes a public review — a proven technique for improving your average star rating over time.
For OpenTable or Resy users: these platforms have their own review systems, but Google and Yelp reviews carry more weight for discoverability. Ask for both if possible, or prioritize Google.
Subject line "How was your meal?" consistently outperforms "Leave us a review" because it sounds conversational, not transactional.
Should restaurants ask for reviews on Google or Yelp?
Both — but prioritize based on your city. In most US cities, Google Maps drives more restaurant discovery than Yelp. In San Francisco, NYC, and LA, Yelp still carries significant weight. For hotels and travel-adjacent restaurants, TripAdvisor matters too. Start with Google, then Yelp, then TripAdvisor if you have capacity.
Can I offer a free drink or discount for leaving a review?
No — Google and Yelp both prohibit incentivized reviews. Yelp is particularly aggressive about this and will add a consumer alert to your listing if they detect it. Just ask honestly.
What response rate should I expect?
1–3% for cold bulk sends. 5–15% for personalized, triggered emails sent within 24 hours of a visit. Emails from a named person ("Maria from [Restaurant]") consistently outperform those from a business name.
