Competitor Review Response Template

Suspected competitor reviews — reviews that appear to be written by a competitor or their associates rather than a genuine customer — are a real and growing problem on Google, Yelp, and Trustpilot. The response strategy has two parallel tracks: flag the review for platform removal (using the platform's report tool) while simultaneously posting a professional response that demonstrates your character to future customers, regardless of whether the review gets removed. This template handles both tracks.

More Ways to Use It

Same structure, different tone. Pick the one that fits the situation.

Version 1 — Review contains competitor comparison (mentions them by name)

Hi [REVIEWER NAME], thank you for your review. We're unable to verify this as a genuine customer experience and have flagged it accordingly. We're confident in the quality of our [product / service] and welcome all legitimate feedback. If we're mistaken, please contact us at [CONTACT] with your details.

Version 2 — Review is vague with no verifiable details

Hi [REVIEWER NAME], we're sorry to see this rating but we're unable to find any record of an interaction under this name. We'd genuinely like to investigate and resolve any issue — please reach out at [CONTACT] with your reference number so we can look into this properly.

WHEN TO USE

When To Use This Template

When To Use This Template

Use when you strongly suspect a review is from a competitor or is otherwise inauthentic — signs include: no interaction history under the name, review posted by a new account with no other reviews, review mentions a competitor by name, multiple suspicious reviews arriving in a short window, or the reviewer follows your competitors on social media. Always flag the review with the platform's report tool simultaneously with posting your response.

CUSTOMIZATION TIPS

How to Customize This Template

How to Customize This Template

  • The phrase "we're unable to locate any record" is more powerful than calling it fake — it plants the seed of doubt for future readers without making an accusation that could provoke retaliation or legal issues.

  • Flag the review for removal on the platform immediately. Google: flag from the review → "Report review." Yelp: flag from the review → "Report this review." The response manages perception while the flag is processed; removal isn't guaranteed but is worth pursuing.

  • Never name the competitor you suspect in your response — it draws more attention to them and creates a public feud that looks bad for both parties. Your response should demonstrate calm confidence, not defensiveness.

  • For a pattern of suspected competitor reviews: document everything (screenshots, dates, reviewer account details) and report to the platform's business support team in addition to flagging individual reviews. Patterns are taken more seriously than single instances.

How do I know if a review is from a competitor vs a real customer?

Warning signs: reviewer profile has very few reviews (0–3), those reviews are all for competitors; the review was posted very shortly after a competitor-relevant event (you opened, won an award, ran a promotion); the review mentions your competitor by name; multiple suspicious reviews arrive simultaneously. None of these are definitive proof, but two or more together justify flagging.

Can I sue for fake competitor reviews?

In the US, fake reviews are prohibited under the FTC's endorsement guidelines and may constitute defamation if they contain false statements of fact. Legal action is expensive and slow. For egregious cases with clear evidence, a cease-and-desist letter is often more effective and faster than litigation. Consult a lawyer before pursuing any legal route.

What happens when I flag a review on Google?

Google reviews your flag against its content policies. This takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Google removes reviews that violate policies (fake, spam, conflict of interest) but doesn't remove reviews simply because you reported them — they investigate each case. Keep your professional response live regardless of the outcome, as removal isn't guaranteed.
