How to Respond to a Review With No Rating
Some review platforms allow text-only feedback without a star rating — or a reviewer may have submitted written feedback before a rating was assigned. This occurs on certain versions of Google, on some industry-specific platforms, and when review format changes leave older reviews without a numerical score. A no-rating review with positive text is still an endorsement worth responding to; a no-rating review with negative text still needs professional management. This template handles both, calibrated for the absence of a quantified score.

WHEN TO USE
Use for any text review without an accompanying star rating. These are relatively rare on Google and Yelp but more common on industry-specific platforms, older reviews that predate rating systems, and platforms undergoing format changes. Your response follows the same logic as rated reviews — read the text, identify the tone (positive, negative, or mixed), and respond accordingly using the appropriate template variation.
CUSTOMIZATION TIPS
Without a visible star rating, your response tone becomes more important — future readers can't rely on a star number to calibrate the reviewer's satisfaction. Make the tone of your response clearly signal whether this was a positive or critical piece of feedback.
For platforms that allow text-only reviews: check whether the absence of a rating affects how the review is displayed or factored into your overall score. Some platforms only incorporate reviews into aggregate scores when a numerical rating is included.
Treat positive no-rating reviews with the same engagement as 5-star reviews — they're endorsements. Treat critical no-rating reviews with the same urgency as 1-star reviews — the absence of a number doesn't reduce the reputational impact of strong negative text.
If you're uncertain whether the no-rating review is positive or negative, lead with gratitude and ask for more information: "Thank you for sharing this — we'd love to understand more about your experience. Please feel free to reach out at [CONTACT]."
Why would a reviewer leave text without a star rating?
Several reasons: the platform doesn't require a rating (some allow text-only); the reviewer submitted before completing the rating step; the platform's rating system changed after the review was written; or the reviewer deliberately chose not to assign a number. The text content is usually more informative than the rating anyway — treat the text as your primary signal.
Do no-rating reviews affect your overall Google or Yelp score?
On Google: most reviews require a star rating to be published; pure text-only Google reviews are rare and don't typically factor into the aggregate star average. On Yelp: text without a star rating also doesn't factor into the overall rating. On industry-specific platforms, this varies — check the platform's documentation.
Should I respond to very old text-only reviews?
If they're positive and you haven't responded yet: yes, briefly. If they're negative: yes, especially if they appear prominently on your profile. Old responses with "Since this review was written, we have..." language are valuable for showing future customers that issues have been addressed over time.
